Erasmo de Rotterdam y Diego López de Zúñiga: una polémica áspera y prolongada

Abstract

La controversia que se dedican Erasmo de Rotterdam y Diego López de Zúñiga fue muy larga y muy dura. Lo que en inicio había sido una controversia filológica, derivada de la traducción latina, hecha por Erasmo, del Nuevo Testamento se convirtió rápidamente en una amarga disputa de lucha por razones teológicas y morales. La causa última de la controversia se refería a la adopción de los métodos filológicos establecidos por los humanistas para el estudio y conocimiento profundo de la Biblia de Erasmo. Esto no era simplemente una cuestión teórica: su objetivo era abrir el camino para una forma de piedad más en sintonía con los nuevos tiempos, lo que permitiría a los cristianos a acercarse a los textos bíblicos, sin hacer excesivo caso a las preocupaciones doctrinales del momento

The controversy which engaged Erasmus of Rotterdam and Diego López de Zúñiga was one of the longest and harshest. What had been at the onset a philological controversy stemming from the Latin version of the New Testament made by Erasmus rapidly evolved into a bitter dispute fought on theological and moral grounds. The ultimate cause of the controversy pertained to Erasmus’s adoption of the philological methods established by the humanists for the study and thorough understanding of the Bible. This wasn’t merely a theoretical question: his aim was opening the way for a form of piety more in tune with the times, allowing Christians to approach biblical texts without heeding excessively the doctrinal worries of the moment.
