This paper explores the main topics, motifs and techniques that build up the hagiographical meanings of the Tablas de San Millán, a 14th-century painting held in the Museum of La Rioja, Logroño. It specially focuses on the construction of San Millan’s identity. Some matters which seem to be remote such as material and narrative structure, iconography or the relationship with other medieval artworks can be helpful to understand key aspects from hagiography like saints’ mediation between God and humans and their fight against their own pain and the suffering of the community. All of this is under analysis in this paper. |
