With the increasing importance of issues concerning the cultural identity and safeguarding of the urban heritage, one can observe the architects’ renewed interest in the morphology of the traditional city, which necessarily involves some understanding of the man-nature relationship. The search for such understanding is of utter importance in the view of the need to protect characteristics of listed places such as the old cities of Olinda and Ouro Preto. Considering this aspect, which is presented as a current pressing demand, we can deepen our understanding of the landscape heritage in the weave of Luso-Brazilian cities, that is, of nuclei or urban centers built during the Brazilian Colonial period, ruled by the same building and urban principles in force in Portugal. Most of the settlements were integrated with the natural environment, where the «green spots» or the «empty spots» were essential for ordering the complexes built, allowing for the presence of ecological components in the implanted weaves and for the basic subsistence of the urban dwellers. Such open spaces were places impregnated with cultural and ecological values, intrinsically associated with the users’ production and recreational activities. It is said that this knowledge guides us towards the search for alternatives that aim at the protection of the architectural landscape ensembles that still remain of old settlements from the Brazilian colonial nuclei.
