Documento histórico y exaltación simbólica en un grabado de Enea Vico: el ejército del emperador Carlos V cruzando el Elba cerca de Mühlberg

Abstract

La estampa denominada «El ejército del Emperador Carlos V cruzando el Elba cerca de Mühlberg », diseñada por E. Vico y grabada por G. B. Mantuano en 1551, fue una de las imágenes que se destinaron a la exaltación de la trascendente victoria que el emperador Carlos V obtuvo frente a los príncipes protestantes de la Liga de Smakalda en 1547. Para conmemorar este triunfo militar, Vico recurrió a un sistema representativo dual en el que se emplean, de forma complementaria, la narración «realista» del acontecimiento y la expresión alegórica y emblemática de las principales virtudes que propiciaron un éxito de tan importante alcance. En el presente artículo vamos a estudiar en profundidad esa doble vertiente, la de documento histórico y la de construcción simbólica –esta última, apenas analizada hasta la fecha pese a la amplia popularidad del grabado–, para comprender el modo en que ambas vías, perfectamente integradas, contribuyeron a dotar al hecho y a sus responsables –los vencedores– de un aura mítica y heroica parangonable a la de los grandes personajes de la Antigüedad clásica.

The plate known as «The Army of Emperor Charles V Crossing the Elba near Mühlberg», drawn by E. Vico and engraved by G. B. Mantuano in 1551, was one of the many images intended to extoll the defeat of the Protestant princes belonging to the Smakalda League by the Emperor Charles V in 1547. In order to commemorate this military triumph, Vico used a dual representative system in which the «realistic» narration of the event, on the one hand, and the allegorical, emblematic expression of the main virtues leading to such a transcendental success, on the other, are complementarily combined. The focus of the present paper will be an in-depth study of those two aspects of the plate, both as an historical document and as a symbolic creation –the latter having received hardly any attention in spite of the popularity of the engraving– in order to reach a deeper understanding of the way which both aspects, being so perfectly entrenched into each other, contributed to endowing the event and its main characters –the victors– with a mythical aura comparable to those of the great protagonists of classical antiquity.
