¿Depresión o evolución?: revisión histórica y fenomenológica del concepto aplicado a la infancia y adolescencia

Abstract

En los últimos años, hemos visto un aumento considerable en la prevalencia de la depresión en todo el mundo y al mismo tiempo una disminución en la edad en que se inicia. Los trastornos depresivos afectan a personas de cualquier edad, condición económica o nivel educativo o cultural, y representan un costo importante para los individuos, la familia, el sistema de salud y la comunidad en general. Aunque existen múltiples estudios sobre la prevalencia, diagnóstico y tratamiento de la depresión en los adultos, hay pocos en la población infantil y adolescente. Además, los resultados de estos estudios son variables, debido básicamente a la dificultad en el diagnóstico en esta etapa de la vida, dado que las manifestaciones clínicas pueden ser menos específicas que en la depresión del adulto. La importancia de profundizar en aspectos claves de la depresión mayor en niños y adolescentes se justifica por la magnitud del problema, tanto en el ámbito de la salud como en el social, y por la demanda generada por las diversas áreas del sistema de sanidad involucradas en el manejo de esta patología.

In recent years we have seen a significant increase in the prevalence of depression in the world and at the same time a decrease in the age at which it starts. Depressive disorders affect people of any age, economic status or cultural or educational level, and represent a significant cost to individuals, families, the health system and the community at large. Although there are many studies on the prevalence, diagnosis and treatment of depression in adults, there is little in the child and adolescent population. Furthermore, the results of these studies are variable, due primarily to the difficulty in diagnosis in this stage of life, since clinical manifestations may be less specific than in adult depression. The importance of depth in key aspects of major depression in children and adolescents is justified by the magnitude of the problem, both in the field of health and the social, and the demand generated by the various areas involved in health system the management of this condition.
