La enseñanza en Badajoz en el primer cuarto del siglo XIX

Abstract

Con este artículo pretendo poner de manifiesto el origen y la evolución de la Enseñanza Primaria en la ciudad pacense. Como en otras partes, las autoridades locales comienzan a preocuparse por la formación del pueblo a partir de la expulsión de los jesuitas; pero va a ser en el siglo XIX cuando se creen las "Juntas Provinciales": que, de ahora en adelante, serán las encargadas de velar por el funcionamiento de las escuelas y de examinar a los maestros. En el cuarto de siglo que estudio la instrucción pública recibe un fuerte impulso y atraviesa una serie de vaivenes, según los azares políticos de cada momento. Así se cumplía el dicho de un autor que ha llegado a afirmar: "la educación es un tema demasiado importante para dejarla sólo en manos de los profesionales".

This article aims to show the origin and evolution of primary education in Badajoz capital. As in other parts, the local authorities begin to worry about the formation of the people after the expulsion of the Jesuits: but it is not until the 19th Century that the Provincial Boards are created, which from then on would be responsible for ensuring the functioning of schools and the examination of teachers. In the quarter of the century studied, public instruction received a strong impulse and passed through a series of vicissitudes according to the political climate of each moment. Thereby fulfilling the refrain which claims "Education is too important a subject to be left only in the hands of the professionals".
