The plot of Shakespeare’s famous tragedy “Romeo and Juliet” was introduced in Spain thanks to Bandello’s short novel during the XVI century. Starting from it, Lope de Vega and Rojas Zorrilla wrote their own versions, which are analyzed in the present paper, as well as the one written by the almost unknown writer Cristóbal de Rosas. Besides, the same topic is discussed on the work of other contemporary playwrights, such as Pemán, Tono, Paso and Martínez Ballesteros. |
