Valerio del Bierzo sobre la "Peregrinatio Egeriae": Deíxis del género literario y sentido de la epístola

Abstract

La “Epistula in laude Egeriae” de Valerio del Bierzo no sólo documenta el conocimiento de la célebre “Peregrinatio” de Egeria en la Hispania visigótica, sino que ofrece una lectura singular de la obra en clave de géneros literarios, desde el discurso homilético a las “pasiones” o relatos de martirio. A este respecto, existen en el texto expresiones como “beatissima sanctimonialis” que reflejan nítidamente el tono martirial que descubre Valerio al evocar en su “Epistula” la “Passio Eulaliae Emeritensis”. El análisis que efectuamos no se limita a adscribir, de acuerdo con Valerio, el género o géneros del “Itinerarium”, sino cómo éste presenta la obra como una “continuatio” bíblica de tipo vulgar, sea por la consideración que le merece el cauce textual de la obra sea porque las experiencias de Egeria son trasladables a las de los monjes contemporáneos de El Bierzo.

The “Epistula in laude Egeriae” by Valerio del Bierzo presents not only a document about the knowledge of the famous “Peregrinatio” of Egeria in Visigoth Hispania, but also offers a unique reading of the work in light of literary genres from homiletic discourse to the “passions” or stories of martyrdom. For example, there are in the text expressions such as “beatissima sanctimonialis”, which clearly reflect the martyr-like tone that Valerius discovers in evoking in his “Epistula” the “Passio Eulaliae Emeritensis”). Our analysis is not limited to defining, according to Valerius, the genre or genres of the “Itinerarium”, but rather examines how it presents the work as a “biblica continuatio”, a type of vulgar literature, both because of the consideration that the textual mode deserves and because the experiences of Egeria are transferable to those of the contemporary monks of El Bierzo.
