Humanism’s pedagogical theories on women’s education emphasise literacy and the learning of classical and Biblical works. However, this innovation did not change the traditional rule of continence and silence in relation to their verbal expression. In this cultural and mental context, the early modern dialogues introduce the participation of women interlocutors. In sixteenth-century Portugal there are approximately five dialogues with female speakers. In these works different social classes and distinct representations of women and female voices are presented, reflecting the social and political views of their authors.
