La imagen de San Erasmo en el beguinaje de Bruselas

Abstract

El presente artículo analiza el motivo, habitual en grabados de los siglos XVI y XVII, del martirio de San Erasmo, mártir cristiano del siglo IV que sufriera diferentes torturas bajo el poder de Domiciano. La victoria ante los diferentes tormentos manifiesta el triunfo de la fe del singular mártir cristiano, aspecto que explica su vinculación con el sentido del beguinaje, comunidades que respondían a un espíritu cristiano que congregaba a sus componentes en asociaciones menos cerradas y severas que los monasterios.

This paper analyzes the motive, habitual in prints of the 16th and 17th centuries, of the martyrdom of Saint Erasmus, Christian martyr of the 4th century that underwent different tortures under the government of Domiciano. The victory against the different torments manifests the triumph of the faith of this singular Christian martyr, aspect that explains its connection with the Beguinage sense, communities that responded to a Christian spirit that congregated its components in associations less closed and severe than the monasteries.
