Nuestras fortalezas I: El Castillo de Medellín.

Abstract

Castillo de Medellín, uno de los que ha llegado hasta nosotros en mejor estado, y que, debido a su elevada ubicación (311 mts) en un cerro testigo perteneciente a las Vegas Altas del rio Guadiana. Resultaría incorrecto desde el punto de vista de un análisis histórico realizar un estudio del edificio del castillo medieval de Medellín sin antes hacer mención a su emplazamiento, ya que desde antiguo el cerro en el que se encuentra, en el margen izquierdo del rio Guadiana, supone un punto estratégico de primer orden para el dominio tanto militar como económico de su entorno. El castillo medieval de Medellín fue declarado monumento histórico artístico (antecedente de la de-claración como Bien de Interés Cultural) el 3 de junio de 1931.

Medellín Castle, one of those which has come down to us in the best condition, and which, due to its elevated location (311 m) on a witness hill belonging to the Vegas Altas of the Guadiana River. It would be incorrect from the point of view of a historical analysis to carry out a study of the building of the medieval castle of Medellín without first mentioning its location, as since ancient times the hill on which it stands, on the left bank of the Guadiana river, has been a strategic point of the first order for the military and economic control of its surroundings. The medieval castle of Medellín was declared a historic-artistic monument (the precursor to its designation as an Asset of Cultural Interest) on 3 June 1931.
