The language of Irish writers can pose certain problems for the translator who is not familiar with the variety of English spoken in Ireland, also known as Hiberno-English. This contact-vernacular often displays words which are clearly influenced by Irish Gaelic but which also reflect Irish ways of life. This paper pays special attention to the translation of two of those words in the poem «Kinship», by the Northern-Irish writer Seamus Heaney, whose choice of dialectal words seeks to invoke the voice of an ancient culture, thus clarifying his own relationship with his country's cultural and linguistic dichotomy. |
