Narrador "versus" autor implícito y análisis de la alteridad en "The remains of the day" de Kazuo Ishiguro

Abstract

El presente artículo se centra en el análisis del autor implícito (categoría acuñada por el teórico Wayne C. Booth) construido por Kazuo Ishiguro en la novela The Rcmains of the Day (1989). Se estudiarán los procedimientos, sobre todo de carácter lingüístico, por los que esta entidad entra en conflicto con el narrador homodiegético. Asimismo se abordarán las repercusiones que tal conflicto, el fenómeno narratológico más llamativo de la obra, tiene en una posible lectura postcolonial de ésta: la caracterización del pro­tagonista Stevens como representante de la alteridad. El trabajo ofrece una revisión de la bibliografia crítica generada hasta la fecha por la novela, repasa la abundante presencia de símbolos en el texto y el significado que distintos autores les han otorgado.

This article deals with the implied author (a term coined by Wayne C. Booth) developed by Kazuo Ishiguro in his novel The &mains of the Day ( 1989). The different, mainly linguistic, processes through which this figure comes into conflict with the homodiegetic narrator are studied. Likewise, attention is paid to the consequences of the conflict (the most striking narrative phenomenon in the text) on a possible postcolonial reading: the characteriza­tion of Stevens, the protagonist, as representative of alterity. In the article, a review of the critica! bibliography generated by this novel till the present day is carried out. The many symbols in it are analysed together with their interpretations by various authors.
