El recurso al "exemplum" en el libro tercero de la "Rhetorica christiana" de fray Diego de Valadés

Abstract

El Libro Tercero o Tercera Parte de la “Rhetorica Christiana” de Fray Diego de Valadés está dedicado al “exemplum”. En el presente estudio se considera que dicho recurso no sólo incumbe a los contenidos de la obra, sino también a su forma y al trasfondo histórico que subyace en ella, para hacer frente al movimiento de la Reforma. El “exemplum” se convierte, pues, en argumento sobre los contenidos bíblicos, sobre la forma de seleccionar tales contenidos y sobre las implicaciones coetáneas. En Valadés, cuando se propone un “exemplum”, se impone una percepción “a posteriori” del recurso.

The third book or part of Diego de Valadés’s “Rhetorica Christiana” is devoted to the “exemplum”. This paper argues that such a device does not only have to do with content, but also with form and history underlying the composition of such a work in order to confront the Restoration movement. The “exemplum” thus becomes the device of shaping Biblical content, the means of selecting such a content, and the time’s implications. In Valade’s work, when an “exemplum” is proposed, a subsequent perception of the devices is enforced.
