La censura a "Os Lusíadas" en el siglo XVI

Abstract

En 1591 el historial del texto de “Os Lusíadas” en portugués se concreta en una edición portuguesa, la “prínceps”, más otras dos, de 1584 y 1591, casi idénticas, mutiladas y muy alteradas. En ese mismo año encontramos tres traducciones al español con el texto íntegro, salvo mínimas alteraciones. La cuarta edición portuguesa, la de Manoel de Lyra, Lisboa, 1597, presenta también alteraciones y mutilaciones que curiosamente han sido poco mencionadas por la crítica. El objeto de este trabajo no se limita a describir la actuación de la censura, sino que procura también indagar sus posibles motivaciones.

In 1591, the history of the text of “Os Lusíadas” in Portuguese was summed up in a Portuguese edition, the “prínceps”, in addition to two other, quasi-identical, mutilated, and very altered editions in 1584 and 1591. In that same year, three full-text translations appeared in Spanish with only a few minor alterations. The fourth Portuguese edition, by Manoel de Lyra (Lisbon, 1597) also contained alterations and mutilations that, curiously, critics rarely mention. The aim of this article is not limited to describing the specific censorship in question, but also to investigating its possible motivations.
