In 1591, the history of the text of “Os Lusíadas” in Portuguese was summed up in a Portuguese edition, the “prínceps”, in addition to two other, quasi-identical, mutilated, and very altered editions in 1584 and 1591. In that same year, three full-text translations appeared in Spanish with only a few minor alterations. The fourth Portuguese edition, by Manoel de Lyra (Lisbon, 1597) also contained alterations and mutilations that, curiously, critics rarely mention. The aim of this article is not limited to describing the specific censorship in question, but also to investigating its possible motivations. |
