Procacidad verbal y traducción: "Volpone, or the fox I.ii" y las versiones de A. Sarabia Santander y P. Ribes

Abstract

El juego verbal se muestra como una de las características más sobresalientes de las obras de los autores isabelinos y jacobeos. Este aspecto enriquece el texto original con nuevas imágenes que, a veces, completan o se oponen a su sentido literal. Por otro lado, ese nuevo elemento confiere al texto original una mayor dificultad a la hora de verterlo a otro idioma. En este trabajo se trata, en primer lugar, de localizar y fijar algunos términos polisémicos de la escena segunda del acto primero de la obra “Volpone, or The Fox” de Ben Jonson. Posteriormente, se realiza un cotejo entre el texto original y las traducciones de A. Sarabia Santander y P. Ribes. Finalmente, se ofrece una valoración de la fidelidad que esas traducciones mantienen con el texto inglés y, concretamente, con el juego verbal allí presente.

One of the most outstanding characteristics of the works of Elizabethan and Jacobean playwrights is wordplay. This enriches the original text by providing new images which may complement or contradict the literal meaning. However, this also makesit more difficult to translate the original text into another language.This paper will, inthe first place, locate some of the polysemous forms in Act one Scene two of “Volpone or the Fox” by Ben Jonson. Then, the translations by A. Sarabia Santander and by P. Ribes will be compared with the original text. Finally, the two translations will be assessed, particularly from the point of view of the multiple meanings deriving from the use of wordplay.
