Ridruejo: Don Juan "en Ronda"

Abstract

Entre las numerosas recreaciones y variaciones introducidas al mito de "Don Juan" en autores españoles del Siglo XX, Dionisio Ridruejo, ensayista, poeta y político, tiene una versión con peculiaridades propias. Su "Don Juan", escrito en los años cuarenta para el teatro, aunque nunca se puso en escena, hace una síntesis de los dos primeros actos de las variaciones ofrecidas por Tirso y Zorrilla, e incorpora una conclusión original en el tercer acto (la más personal) cuando Ridruejo pone su Don Juan en la ciudad de Ronda (donde el propio autor se instaló por su disidencia con el gobierno de Franco) y le hace saltar por la famosa garganta para convertirse en dueño del mito de su muerte, es decir, dueño de su propio destino.

Among the numerous additions and variations made to the "Don Juan" myth by 20th century Spanish authors, one which has its own peculiarities is that by the essayist, poet and politician, Dioniso Ridruejo. His “Don Juan”, written in the forties for the theatre though never staged, attempts a synthesis in the first two acts of the variations offered by Tirso and Zorilla, and incorporates an original conclusion in the third act (the most personal) when Ridruejo takes his Don Juan to the town of Ronda (where the author himself was confined for his dissidence with the Franco government) and he has him jump from the famous gorge to become master till death of his own myth, that is, master of his own fate.
