Ecos universitarios de devoción mariana en la periferia de la monarquía hispánica durante la Edad Moderna

Abstract

Durante buena parte de la Edad Moderna, la Universidad de Salamanca fue el centro de educación superior más importante de la Monarquía Hispánica. Su influencia quedó plasmada no sólo en el imaginario colectivo, sino también a través de una simbología cuya expresión plástica fue muy intensa en Salamanca y otras ciudades no necesariamente universitarias. El objetivo de esta investigación es ahondar en el significado de emblemas como el vítor, un símbolo relacionado, en principio, con la vida académica pero que también va a adquirir una dimensión religiosa en esta época. Metodológicamente se aborda el análisis iconográfico de este tipo de grafismos a partir de un caso que, paradójicamente, no se encuentra en la ciudad salmantina, si bien su influencia es evidente. Para ello se han utilizado fuentes documentales e iconográficas, primarias e impresas, relacionadas con la devoción y el fervor inmaculista del siglo XVII en España. En definitiva, se pone de relieve la irradiación de un fenómeno cuya doble vertiente, universitaria y mariana, quedó plasmada en lugares periféricos relativamente lejanos al "Studium Salmanticensis".

The University of Salamanca was the most important center of higher education in the Hispanic Monarchy for much of the Modern Age. Its influence was reflected not only in the collective imagination, but also through a symbolism whose artistic expression was intense in Salamanca and other cities. The main objective of this research is to address the meaning of emblems such as ‘vitor’, a symbol linked, in principle, to university life, although it will also acquire a religious dimension at this time. From the methodological point of view, this article deals with the iconographic analysis of this type of graphics from a case that, paradoxically, is not found in the city of Salamanca, although its influence is evident. To achieve this, primary and printed documentary and iconographic sources have been used, all related to the immaculistic devotion and fervor of the 17th century in Spain. In short, it aims to highlight the irradiation of a phenomenon whose double aspect, university and religious, was reflected in peripheral places relatively distant from the "Studium Salmanticensis".
