Although it maintained its “neutral” status during the Second World War, Spain played a fundamental role in the Holocaust as an escape route for thousands of Jews living in countries occupied by Nazi Germany, hundreds of them Spanish, for whom the country was directly responsible. This doctoral thesis examines the actions of the Spanish Foreign Service during the Holocaust during the years of German occupation of France (1940-1944), home to Western Europe’s largest Jewish-Spanish community. The aim of this work is to understand the mentality at the time of both the dictator and his diplomacy, examine the orders issued by Franco’s regime in relation to the Jewish community and the transit of refugees during the Second World War, and the compliance or non-compliance with these orders on the part of different members of the diplomatic corps, some of whom, in their personal capacity, put their careers on the line in order to save as many Jews as possible, Spanish or otherwise. The subsequent chapters provide answers to questions previously unresolved by historiography, such as the fate of properties owned by Jews, the role of saviour played by the Spanish Catholic Mission in Paris and the attitude of Spanish democracy compared with other neutral countries (Turkey, Portugal...). Converts or not, linked to a greater or lesser degree to Hispanic language and culture, Spanish Jews saw how their lives depended on both the political measures taken by the pro-Nazi regime and the humanitarian attitude of certain diplomats and members of the clergy.es_ES
