Zurbarán y las texturas de la Contrarreforma

Abstract

Francisco de Zurbarán es, en opinión de muchos, uno de los máximos exponentes de la pintura barroca en España y el Nuevo Mundo. No sólo eso; la elección de los temas y el tratamiento estético de los mismos permiten considerarlo uno de los ejecutores del programa teológico de la Contrarreforma. Nuestro acercamiento a su biografía y a su obra, particularmente a las series “Los doce hijos de Jacob”, ayudan a desvelar la trama que soportó ese nuevo rumbo de la Iglesia católica que se hará fuerte en Sevilla, la ciudad que acogió la mayor parte de la trayectoria profesional del pintor, y en el Nuevo Mundo, hacia donde dirigió su producción cuando el mercado y la misión evangelizadora abrieron nuevas oportunidades.

Francisco de Zurbarán is, in the opinion of many, one of the greatest exponents of baroque painting in Spain and America. Not only that; the election of the subjects and the aesthetic treatment of the same ones, allow to consider it one of the executors of the theological program of the Counter-Reformation. Our approach to his biography and his work, particularly the series "Jacob and his Twelve Sons", help unveil the warp and weft that supported that new direction of the Catholic Church that will become strong in Seville, the city that hosted most of the professional career of the painter, and in the New World, where he oriented his production when the market and the evangelizing mission opened new opportunities.
