La infancia del rey don Pelayo en Alcántara: el nacimiento de una leyenda

Abstract

Desde que en la primera mitad del siglo XV Pedro del Corral, en la “Crónica del rey don Rodrigo con la destrucción de España”, novelara la infancia de don Pelayo y sus pasos por tierras de Alcántara, fueron muchos los autores que los convirtieron en hechos históricos. La mayor parte de ellos, junto al valor que le confirieron al fantasioso texto, se apoyaron en un elemento tangible, el arca que existió en el conventual de San Benito, de Alcántara, a la que la tradición señalaba que fue la transportó a don Pelayo en su travesía por el río Tajo.

Since in the first half of the fifteenth century Pedro del Corral, in the “Chronicle of King Don Rodrigo with the Destruction of Spain”, novelized the childhood of Don Pelayo and his steps through the lands of Alcantara, there were many authors who turned them into historical facts. Most of them, along with the value they gave to the fanciful text, relied on a tangible element, the ark that existed in the convent of San Benito, in Alcántara, to which tradition indicated that it was transported to Don Pelayo in its crossing by the Tagus river.
