Homer is, without any doubt, the author with whom Greek schoolchildren learnt how toread and write. This fact, known historically thanks to the testimony of Greek and Latin writers, is reinforced by archaeological school material finds in Egypt, papyrus, potshards and tablets which mention the dominant role of this poet in primary education. The present article, through the study and classification of this school material, aims to discover if the operative function of Homer's texts goes beyond the practica! and immediate objectives of learning to read and write. |
