The death penalty, in Greek and Roman societies, responded to various demands and developed differentiated functions: 1) to affirm the authority of the State; 2) to remove the collective sense of anguish and danger derived from the fear that an illegal act would provoke contamination and divine vengeance; 3) to prevent the victims of an affront, not obtaining justice, from taking justice into their own hands. |
