The percentage of elderly is growing dramatically lately. This implies a number of changes in political, social and health structures. At the same time, we have to cope with the challenge of new issues such as social security, social participation and situations related to mental health such as suicidal behavior. The sample of this study was 100 institutionalized older adults of three nursing homes from the province of Granada. The principal aim was to describe the prevalence of suicidal behavior between institutionalized elderly. With this purpose we studied age, gender, education, marital status, time of permanence in the nursing home, visits he/she receives and who visits them, medical diagnosis, functional capacity and subjective health perception in their implication for suicidal behavior. The instruments used were Mini Mental State Examination- MMSE (Spanish version) and Suicide Risk Scale (Spanish version). The results show a high presence of suicide risk related to subjective health perception. |
