Such a passionate defense of the tithe as that assumed in 1828 by the anonymous author of Historia y origen de las rentas de la Iglesia de España desde su fundación (History and origin of the revenues of the Church of Spain since its foundation), supposes, apart from an anti-historical return to positions more typical of the moments of maximum splendor of the Ancien Régime than of the transition stage in which it was immersed, ignoring the slow erosion that it had suffered, as a mechanism of absorption of the productive surplus, since its payment became generalized at the end of the 15th century. It was a difficult task, then, that our author undertook to convince his readers that, in these times, the tithe continued to be a legitimate debt, of rigorous justice and whose annual payment should be observed punctually so that the Church could meet the welfare commitments it had acquired with the most underprivileged strata of society.
