La memoria en la "Tertia et ultima pars Rhetoricae" de Juan Lorenzo Palmireno

Abstract

Se analiza aquí el breve pero interesante ensayo sobre la memoria que contiene la "Tertia et ultima pars Rhetoricae" de Juan Lorenzo Palmireno (Valentiae, 1566). La atención prestada a la memoria va más allá de lo habitual en los tratados retóricos de la época y se explica por el interés de algunos humanistas y de no pocos lectores por desarrollar la memoria "per locos et imagines" siguiendo las pautas dadas ya en la antigüedad por Cicerón, el autor de la "Rhetorica ad Herennium" y Quintiliano. Se pone de manifiesto la influencia de la doctrina aristotélica y tomista, así como de algunos tratadistas de retórica, como Petrus Ramus y Antonio Llul, y de memoria, como Ioannes Romberch.

The short but interesting essay on memory contained in the "Tertia et ultima pars Rhetoricae Laurentii Palmireni" (Valentiae, 1566) is analyzed here. This text focuses on memory much more than other contemporary rhetoric treatises, which would indicate to what extent not only humanists but also readers were interested on developing memory "per locos et imagines" by following the guidelines given in Antiquity by Cicero, the author of the "Rhetorica ad Herennium" and Quintilian. Finally the influence of the Aristotelian and Thomistic doctrine and of some writers, such as Petrus Ramus, Antonio Llull and Ioannes Romberch, is also studied.
