Prefiguring a democratic state: student activism and the National Education Law in Myanmar

Abstract

This article aims to contribute to contemporary understanding of student activism dynamics by using insights from prefiguration literature. We use practical prefiguration and conceptual prefiguration to analyse student protests against education reform in Myanmar in 2014–2015. Using in-depth interviews with student activists, their list of educational demands, and secondary sources regarding educational legislation, we unpack the complex relationship between educational claims and national politics that characterised the students’ struggle. We show how the students reimagined a new and better version of the Myanmar state by using both educational practice and theory to fuse the future with the present, the desired with the possible.

Este artículo pretende contribuir a la comprensión contemporánea de de la dinámica del activismo estudiantil a partir de la literatura sobre la de la prefiguración. Utilizamos la prefiguración práctica y la prefiguración conceptual para analizar las protestas estudiantiles contra la reforma Myanmar en 2014-2015. A partir de entrevistas en profundidad activistas estudiantiles, su lista de demandas educativas y fuentes secundarias y fuentes secundarias sobre legislación educativa, desentrañamos la compleja relación entre las reivindicaciones educativas y la política nacional que caracterizó la lucha de los estudiantes. Mostramos cómo los estudiantes reimaginaron una versión nueva y mejor del Estado de Myanmar utilizando tanto la práctica como la teoría educativa para fusionar el futuro con el presente, lo deseado con lo posible.
