Horace' Odes IV 11 is a complex composition which combines two main themes. The convivial theme in the first part (lines 1-16) and the philosophical thought in the second (21-32). A central strophe (17-20) links both parts by a smooth transition. As the reason of the feast described in the first section is Maecenas birthday, this part is best understood as a genethliakás o birthdaypoem. On the other hand, a feeling of fear of death pervades the second part of the poem, including the mythological exempla of Phaeton and Bellerophontes. |
