The function of biblical discourse in "Hamlet" and its handling in José María Valverde's translation

Abstract

Este estudio se centra en el uso que Shakespeare hace de numerosas citas y referencias a la Sagrada Escritura en “Hamlet”, prestando especial atención a la función de la intertextualidad producida por el discurso bíblico en esta tragedia. Un análisis contrastivo del texto de la época isabelina y las traducciones al español de José María Valverde, Luis Astrana Marín y Miguel Ángel Conejero Dionís-Bayer demuestran que el intertexto bíblico correspondiente se recrea en gran medida en el idioma de destino de estos tres autores, y en particular por Valverde. El análisis también contribuye a reafirmar la tesis de que en ningún caso fue el objetivo de intertextualidad bíblica de Shakespeare de un carácter ético o religioso sino puramente estético o decorativo.

This study focuses on the use Shakespeare makes of the numerous quotations from, and references to, the Holy Scripture in “Hamlet”, paying special attention to the function of the intertextuality produced by the biblical discourse in this particular tragedy. A contrastive analysis of the Elizabethan text and the Spanish translations of José María Valverde, Luis Astrana Marín and Miguel Ángel Conejero Dionís-Bayer demonstrates that a corresponding biblical intertext is recreated to a great extent in the target language by these three authors, and especially by Valverde. The analysis also contributes to reaffirm the thesis that in no case was the objective of Shakespeare’s scriptural intertextuality of an ethic or religious nature but purely an aesthetic or decorative one.
