The systematic use by the so-called «art film» of theatrical devices throughout most of the silent period was gradually repaced by a more profound transposition of dramatic elements into the language of film. Later on, the process started working in the opposite direction, and it became more frequent to find dramatists who used elements borrowed from the cinema in their plays. Tennessee Williams and Harold Pinter are two such dramatists. The aim of this essay is to explore the evolution undergone by the theatre in this field, through the analysis of Sweet bird of Youth by T. Williams and Betrayal by H. Pinter.
