Dos obras inéditas del escultor Sebastián de Paz

Abstract

Se dan a conocer dos nazarenos del escultor alcantarino Sebastián de Paz. La primera talla, de la que se conserva el torso, los brazos y la cabeza, se encuentra en la iglesia parroquial de Zarza la Mayor, es la imagen más dramática de las dos, de cara patética en consonancia con el gusto realista del barroco de la primera mitad del siglo XVII. Todo contribuye a dar esa nota de angustia dentro de la línea de expresividad y patetismo religioso tan propio de las obras de Sebastián de Paz. El otro procede de Villamiel, de rostro más cansado, es un Cristo que sufre en la cruz antes de expirar.

Two woodcarvings of Christ by the sculptor Sebastián de Paz, born in Alcántara (Cáceres), are featured. The first one, of which torso, arms and head are conserved, is in the parish church of Zarza la Mayor and it is the most dramatic image of the two, with a pathetic face according to the realistic taste of the Baroque of the first half of the 17th century. Everything contributes to give that note of anguish within the line of expressivity and religious pathos so typical of the works of Sebastián de Paz. The other comes from Villamiel, with a more tired face, a Christ who suffers on the cross before expiring.
