El castigo del «cornudo paciente»: un detalle iconográfico en la vista de sevilla de joris hoefnagel (1593)

Abstract

En el quinto volumen de las Civitates orbis terrarum (editado por Frans Hogenberg y Georg Braun, Colonia, 1598) se incluye, entre los numerosos planos y panorámicas de ciudades con que se ilustra este importante atlas urbano, una Vista de Sevilla, grabado original del artista flamenco Joris Hoefnagel que resulta especialmente llamativo por la incorporación, en el primer término de la estampa, de una escena en la que se representa el castigo público de una mujer adúltera y su marido consentidor –el «cornudo paciente»–. La existencia de un emblema manuscrito del pro- pio Hoefnagel en cuya imagen encontramos un episodio muy similar, nos ofrece algunas pistas sobre el posible significado, al menos en su origen, de este curioso detalle iconográfico.

Among the numerous maps and bird’s-eye views of the cities that are included in the fifth volume of the important urban atlas Civitates orbis terrarium (edited by Frans Hogenberg and Georg Braun, Cologne, 1598) a View of Seville is found. This original engraving by the Flemish artist Joris Hoefnagel, is particularly remarkable, since, in the foreground, there is a scene representing the public punishment of an adulterous woman and her deceived husband –«the patient cuckold»–. The existence of a manuscript emblem by Hoefnagel himself, in whose image we find a similar episode, offers some clues about the possible meaning, at least in its origin, of this peculiar iconographic detail
